CASI and Piramal Foundation India Summer Internship for Penn (University of Pennsylvania) undergraduates
For the second year, CASI and Piramal Foundation are pleased to announce a competitive internship with the Grassroots Development Lab (GDL). The internship is available to Penn students who are eager to work in India, getting a hands-on sense of the issues in development. GDL is an innovation driven organization that works in a variety of sectors, including healthcare, education, livelihoods, and technology utilization. Its strategy is to implement projects intensively in a small geographical area, reducing overall poverty in that area.
An internship with the GDL will enable Penn undergraduates and graduates to meaningfully contribute to poverty reduction. Students can work on developing new strategies and on finding more effective ways of implementing older ideas. The program will help Penn students better understand and reflect on a variety of poverty reduction strategies in diverse sectors.
The internship involves eight weeks with the GDL which is located in Bagar, a large village in Rajasthan. The intern will work to implement best practices in education, livelihoods, access to technology, and health. Working with local entrepreneurs, other international students and Indicorps volunteers, the intern will be part of management, do applied research or develop new initiatives.
This year CASI will provide five Penn students with with $2,500 each to travel to and within India. Piramal Foundation will provide room, board, and support with logistical issues within India. CASI will hold an open house for prospective applicants on Thursday, January 29, 2009, from 4 to 6 pm. Prospective applicants can meet last year’s interns to learn about their experiences.
